Abstract
With innovation taking centre stage in the global quest for economic development in recent years, Sweden’s southernmost county of Skåne has set out to become Europe’s most innovative region by 2020. Supporting and developing youth’s innovative capacity is viewed as one of the several ways to achieve this goal. This thesis looks at the relationship between youth innovation and spaces where it is enacted, with the aim to deliver suggestions for youth innovation facilitation. A number of different spaces for youth were studied with the help of qualitative methods: semi-structured interviews, observations and visual ethnography. The concepts of space and place, capital, habitus, and heterotopia were employed as theoretical and analytical tools... (More)

This thesis looks at the relationship between youth innovation and spaces where it is enacted, with the aim to deliver suggestions for youth innovation facilitation. A number of different spaces for youth were studied with the help of qualitative methods: semi-structured interviews, observations and visual ethnography. The concepts of space and place, capital, habitus, and heterotopia were employed as theoretical and analytical tools in the analysis of the empirical material. The analysis of a youth club in Lund showed the significance of engaging and transformative places for the development of an innovative and creative mindset in youth. The case of a Malmö youth club highlighted the aspect of inclusion of diverse youth in innovative practices, as well as the importance of virtual spaces for youth. A failure story from a Malmö district raised the issues of identity, legitimacy of youth as worthy partners and innovators, and the implications of a lack of relevant capital. The three places were positioned in a relationship with the space of regional innovation planners at Region Skåne, and a set of recommendations was drawn up on supporting youth innovation processes through developing and strengthening spaces for the youth.
