Abstract
The purpose for which the study was conducted was to investigate firm-specific advantages of standardization, and how standardization routines optimized and changing as intra organizational learning. The study was conducted as a qualitative case study where the pattern matching method is used to compare and analyse the collected data against a pre-constructed theoretical framework.

The theoretical framework is a merger of two research areas. The framework is based on a review of Blind’s (2004) classifications of standards and benefits associated with these. In addition, we have based our framework on the theory of firm-specific activities that is described as routines by Nelson & Winter (1982), later developed by Felin et al (2012) with... (More)

The theoretical framework is a merger of two research areas. The framework is based on a review of Blind’s (2004) classifications of standards and benefits associated with these. In addition, we have based our framework on the theory of firm-specific activities that is described as routines by Nelson & Winter (1982), later developed by Felin et al (2012) with a classification and definition of the micro-components that constitute them. The study will investigate how these routines change and improve by using a knowledge-based perspective. This will lead us to organizational learning and Levitt and March (1988) conceptual model of organizational learning and knowledge accumu-lation. This perspective is based on the behavioral view of the firm (Cyert & March, 1963) and the study therefore illustrates primarily the motivational approach to procedures, as outlined by Zbaracki & Bergen (2010).

We hereby note that the constructed theoretical framework of our study was confirmed. In-teresting observations could be made based on our theoretical and empirical findings and we found that there are firm-specific advantages of standardization in Akrybia, although only knowned by the direcly involved individuals working with these processes.
The main firm-specific benefits of standardization in Akrybia are reduced transaction costs and "raising rival's costs". Furthermore, the study confirms that routines are based on micro compo-nents and that the interactions within these components are complex and in highly dependent on individuals.

Individual learning in Akrybia’s standardization routine is absorbed, to a small extent, on the organizational level. This is mainly because of the fact that routines has low status in the company and that the senior management does not acknowledge or know of the firm-specific benefits derived from these activities.

Individual learning has modified the individual performance frameworks but not the organizational framework, enabling us to classify routine in Akrybia as a fragile truce. We found that the truce was broken when external factors accentuate the importance of standardization only to create a new truce and routine. We cannot see if the truce that is created makes the best solution for the routines of standardization within Akrybia. The reason for this is that routines are dynamic by nature and it is only afterwards that we can determine if the routine has changed to the positive. (Less)
