Despite the reduced influence of Lund after the protestant reformation, the town kept a regional position of power that appears to have attracted Scanian high nobility with manors in more distant parts of the region. The leading officials of the institutions of power had in several cases houses in the town.
Lund, with a lingering prestige mainly represented by the cathedral, formed a desired arena for the high nobility’s ideologically-based status-improving consumption. Materially it was expressed by fine houses and grand tombstones in the cathedral. Most likely, a suitable social life was developed in the town.
The economical factors appear to have been of less importance. Lund was not an important market for the nobility’s manorial produce. Neither do urban real estates appear to have been important for the nobility as investment objects. (Less)
