- Abstract
- The proliferation of nuclear weapons is a global threat, which led to the creation
of treaties like NPT to reduce the proliferation of nuclear weapons. However this
hasn’t prevented states from still acquiring nuclear weapons. North Korea and

understand why they differ in openness, each state has been analyzed on a system,
state and individual level to explain more generally why states hide/show their
nuclear ambitions. The results showed that North Korea is open with their nuclear
weapons to deter the enemy from threatening their sovereignty. While Iran might
hide nuclear weapons ambitions, because they want to avoid pre-emptive strikes
from Israel and sanctions from the West. The comparison of North Koreas and
Iran’s results led to the conclusion that a state’s tendency to hide/show their
nuclear weapon ambitions are due to the state's role in the international system
and what advantages/disadvantages it might mean for their national interests to
show nuclear weapon ambitions. (Less)
