Abstract
The silo is a landmark that is known for its unique shape, height and large volume and is now a building that in our big cities threatens extinction. This type of construction is not usually built anymore, all because of new techniques that replaces this kind of large mass grain storages. The intention of the report is to analyze how an industrial building, shaped as a silo can be changed into residential blocks. The study is meant to describe how
this can be done in a sustainable way by preserving as much as possible from the original construction. The reconstruction is analyzed from a technical angle and is based on the work of a student of architecture, Christoffer Justusson. The project he has made is then studied and analyzed to... (More)
The silo is a landmark that is known for its unique shape, height and large volume and is now a building that in our big cities threatens extinction.
The project he has made is then studied and analyzed to confirm if the project is
technically possible and also what changes needs to be made in the construction. An important part of the report is meant to analyze if there is a possibility to
cover the facade with climbing green plants. A number of problems forms the base of the report, such as, if it is possible to
perform the transformation and how does the process along the way look like. To see how history has left its marks on the building is also an important observation. Even the study of a green facade has contributed with some questions, like if the idea even is possible in the area and how the plants affect the building and the people around it. Furthermore what plants can be used and how maintenance is done is also analyzed. By our own gathered knowledge and by consulting specialists in several
domains and also by reading technical literature, necessary information has been collected for the report. The result of the report describes the importance in preserving this unique silo in the city of Malmö and how changing it into residential blocks amplifies the fact that it has an enormous contribution to the city's history. As a result of the work a conclusion can be made. That this kind of transformation takes an enormous amount of planning and preparatory work to create a successful result
with sustainable technology. (Less)
