Abstract
The study investigates the difficulties small companies experience in implementing a standardized environmental management system or achieving an Eco-label. Further the study evaluates what should be included in an environmental management system to establish credibility. The market for Eco-labels and certifications has generally been adapted for large companies, but since the environmental awareness in society has increased there is a greater focus on environmental activities also in small companies.
The result of this project shows that although there is a common belief that Eco-labels and certifications are too complex for small companies, Eco labels and environmental certifications (e.g. ISO 14001) on the market likewise suit small... (More)
The study investigates the difficulties small companies experience in implementing a standardized environmental management system or achieving an Eco-label. Further the study evaluates what should be included in an environmental management system to establish credibility. The result of this project shows that although there is a common belief that Eco-labels and certifications are too complex for small companies, Eco labels and environmental certifications (e.g. ISO 14001) on the market likewise suit small companies since their requirements can be adapted to the company’s scope. Yet the cost of certification is often too high for small companies and the environmental knowledge to understand the requirements for an approved environmental management system might be lacking. Due to the economic difficulty small companies are experiencing, some Eco-labels and certifications have specialised on small companies. They provide less expensive “diplomas” with less stringent requirements of certain areas which are mainly associated with big businesses. Further the result shows that in terms of credibility the most successful way to work with environmental issues in a company is to achieve a well-known Eco-label or certification. This creates a positive pressure on the company to improve due to the regular external inspections. However, if a certification is not financially possible, companies can present their environmental activities on their website or in social media and at the accommodation to improve the transparency. Finally the report focuses on the small-scale Bed & Breakfast Aplagården and examines how the company can improve the environmental work to establish credibility. (Less)
