- Abstract
- In this paper, I have attempted to understand how innovative education programs to reduce drop-out rates among girls are conceptualized at the inception level. I have also tried to study how these programs are perceived at the ground level through participant observation of a case. I observed the implementation of an innovative education program focused on increasing life-skills among girls through participant observation. The primary field work for this paper was done in Sirohi district, Rajasthan, India. Towards the end of the paper, I have tried to analyze the interaction of the two in the context of development studies. - In this paper, I have attempted to understand how innovative education programs to reduce drop-out rates among girls are conceptualized at the inception level. I observed the implementation of an innovative education program focused on increasing life-skills among girls through participant observation. The primary field work for this paper was done in Sirohi district, Rajasthan, India. Towards the end of the paper, I have tried to analyze the interaction of the two in the context of development studies. In this course, I have used Amartya Sen’s capability approach as a theoretical background to understand this interaction. There are two main findings of the study. Firstly, a need to re-think the present system of education is highlighted in the government documents. The government is trying to find new and innovative methods to solve the problems of gender gaps and drop-out rates in schools. Second, at the reception level, government school teachers and students themselves receive these programs with enthusiasm. Hence, innovative educational programs have a potential to become an all-inclusive education strategy. However, it needs to be kept in mind that implementation of these programs at a larger scale would require immense planning and training of workforce. This paper concludes with an optimistic view on innovative programs and sees it as an important step that can help reduce drop-out rates and increase enrollment rates. (Less)
