- Abstract
- In the last four decades different regulations have been introduced through directives and agreements to strengthen the work for a sustainable future and the road to reach it. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is one practical example which is suppose to provide a broad prediction of how a project will affect the environment. On the one hand EIA is a regulated, strong tool to reach a sustainable future, and on the other hand previous studies show inefficiency in the process and in the document and that the predictions are unsure and insufficient.

(More) - In the last four decades different regulations have been introduced through directives and agreements to strengthen the work for a sustainable future and the road to reach it.
The purpose of this study is to analyze how predictions of environmental impacts are handled in the EIA of metal powder industry Höganäs. Also through the analysis open for a discussion on possibilities and the complications that come with predictions of environmental impacts. The study is based on previous research in the area and on the analysis of the EIA through the review package developed at Oxford Brookes University. Environmental goals and norms that Sweden have adopted to strengthen sustainable development are used as quantitative reference when the environmental state is discussed in the study.
The results of the analysis show over all god results. A god use of investigations, sampling and well motivated considerations regarding the surrounding environment and its sensitivity are found in the evaluation of the effects. But the results also show complexity in dealing with predicting the impacts over time and to value the probability in the assessment. One conclusion is that uncertainty is a inevitable part in predicting the effects and state of environment in a somewhat illusive future. (Less)
