Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
Abstract
The aim of this study was to illuminate bisexual identity formation by examining what impact cultural attitudes towards bisexuality have in this process. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with six bisexual persons. Based upon a hermeneutic approach, thematic analysis was used to analyze the data and five main themes were identified: The need to be true to oneself, Adjusting oneself to the context, Politically charged encounters with the surrounding world, Managing a stigmatized identity, and Searching for a community. The result shows that cultural bi-negative attitudes may contribute to a need to be true to oneself. For some of the interviewees this means actively embracing their bisexual identity while for others this means not... (More)

The result shows that cultural bi-negative attitudes may contribute to a need to be true to oneself. For some of the interviewees this means actively embracing their bisexual identity while for others this means not identifying themselves as bisexual, as they do not want others to define who they are. One way to manage stigmatization is to adjust the identity for the current context, which makes it difficult to keep up an outward bisexual identity. Another way is to actively respond to prejudices. Bisexuals can experience being objectified when they encounter the surrounding world, but they use their opportunities to act in ways that affect the bi-negative attitudes towards becoming more positive. Bisexuals are experiencing a lack of an own community in that they neither belong to the straight- nor the gay world. This may explain why bisexuals’ struggle for attaining general acceptance of their bisexual identity is not performed on a group level but rather on an individual level. (Less)
