- Abstract
- The aim of this study is to conduct preliminary risk assessments of two abandoned landfills in the villages of Bjärsjölagård and Fränninge, in the municipality of Sjöbo, Scania. Assessing risks connected to abandoned landfills is of great importance as they can contain a large number of pollutants, hence pose a risk for their surroundings by polluting soil, ground water and even buildings. It is also an essential step towards reaching Sweden's environmental policy goals.
As this is a preliminary study, all the information is gathered by studying documents and records from the municipality archives in Sjöbo and Hörby, as well as the county administrative board archives in Scania. Bjärsjölagård's landfill was in use between the years 1946-1975, whereas Fränninge's landfill was used between 1965-1974. Fränninge's landfill is the largest of the two, even though it was in use for a much shorter period of time than the Bjärsjölagård landfill. Records show that a variety of different waste types were dumped and that incineration of waste occurred at both landfills. It is also very likely that industrial waste from car workshops, foundries and agriculture in the surrounding areas have found their way into the landfills. This would indicate that hazardous pollutants such as heavy metals (e.g. Pb, Hg, As, Sn), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, organic compounds, and solvents are likely to be found in the landfills.
Following the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency (Naturvårdsverket) guidelines (referral version) for risk assessments of landfills, the results of this preliminary study show that both landfills pose a very high risk of being hazardous to both humans and the environment. Thus, additional examinations of the landfills should be performed.
