Abstract
According to Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau’s discourse theory, language is a social practise that constructs knowledge. Thus, how we name a political problem in society defines it’s actual content and how we are able to define a solution to the problem. The purpose of this paper is to examine how we may use logics from the discourse theory to destabilise the gender order in Swedish gender equality policy. The method used is derived from the discourse strategy to deconstruct a social phenomenon in order to bring new knowledge to a societal issue. A theoretical framework of discourse theory combined with feminist theory is constructed to understand how the gender order is produced and changing in discursive terms. Through a discursive... Through a discursive understanding of the gender order, it is possible to conclude that Swedish equality policy is characterized by antagonism. A hegemonic intervention may redefine how we perceive our identity in relation to our sex. The final conclusion of the paper is that in order to truly become gender equal we must cease to polarize within the binary logic of the separation of gender. (Less)
