Abstract
This thesis aims to examine the European Union’s policy regarding immigration to the EU from third part states. The main purpose is to highlight the reformations that have taken place since the late 50’s.

Through an critical discourse analysis as a method, the thesis concludes that EU’s present-day restrictive migration policy has had substantial influence on how we interpret the concept of immigrants. The method attempts to uncover different underlying patterns in the Union’s treaties, communications and documents, that have affected the phenomena of illegal immigration and transformed what were earlier legal labor immigrants to, what EU refers to, as the ”illegal immigrants”. This thesis adopts a social constructivist perspective.

Three different theories are used to describe the underlying factors which are to be found in each paper formed by the Union; realism, critical security studies and finally pluralism. The thesis also intends to promote a solution for a future theory, which is the latter, to reach an improved cooperation between the member states. (Less)
