Abstract
This C-level thesis aims at increasing the understanding of the applications of the visiting policy within the prison with a special focus on children visiting. We want to examine how the prison environment is perceived in retrospect by adults as well as what they remember about their experiences as children when visiting a detained parent in prison. The Prison service guidelines clearly states that it is on the child's condition that the meeting with the parent may or not occur, and if the child’s terms is in need of meeting or not. It has also been of interest to highlight users and professionals' views on this. The selection has been limited to five users who visited their fathers at the prison, as the majority of them that are now in custody and serving sentences in prison are men. Of the five users who were interviewed for this paper, four have the experience of visiting their father at a prison as a child, the fifth user has the experience instead of getting a visit from a child while the fifth user has experience of serving a prison sentence. We have preceded institutes in Halmstad and Helsingborg. To get an overall picture, we also interviewed three “barnombudsmän” and a professional in the association “Bryggan” which is a non-profit organization focused on children of detained parents. We have used in-depth interviews.

The results of the survey show that today the child’s perspective is taken into account to a greater extent and that inquiries are made about the benefits of the visit and that the contact between the detained father and the child is the child's benefit or not. It also uses the UNCRC and that contact is made on the child's terms. The examination shows based on interviews with the professionals and the users that the policy of visiting prisons as child have changed over the years and they now have a greater focus on making visits as child friendly as possible. Users describe the prison as a harsh and cold environment even for visitors which has been imprinted itself in their memories. They describe the shame, guilt and dishonesty communication. They also describe whether children should visit detained parents or not. (Less)
