Abstract
Issue of Study: The case company, Metius, has difficulties in meeting its customers’ demands for delivery reliability due to issues in the final assembly process. A leading management control system linked to the company’s final assembly could allow the production management to act proactively and avoid more dissatisfied customers due to poor delivery reliability.
Relevant literature gives little support for the development of leading management control systems, both in terms of definitions of what a leading indicator is and what defines a suitable leading indicator. The literature does however describe that root cause analysis can be used to develop leading indicators, but not in what form or way.

The theoretical purpose of the thesis is to, based on relevant literature, create and apply a definition of what leading indicators are, create and apply attributes of suitable leading indicators and a leading management control system. The purpose is also to contribute to guidance in what root cause analysis methodology to utilize in the development of leading indicators.

Method: This study has been pursued with a deductive approach. A comprehensive literature study have been conducted covering areas of management control, management control system, KPI:s and indicators and processes. Both qualitative and quantitative data have been collected mainly through semi structured interviews by stratified selection. Data have been analyzed through process maps and root cause analysis in order to develop indicators and a management control system which is quality assured by theoretical grounded through the detailed literature study.

Conclusion: The master thesis shows how a leading management control system can be designed for a process based on the process inputs and is’t root causes to interference. 11 indicators have been designed and collected into a management control system in order to predict changes in the probability of failure in the process inputs which can affect the overall delivery process in a negative way. The specific recommended control system is not generalizable but the definitions of leading and lagging created in this master’s thesis are. (Less)
