- Abstract
- The majority of current social workers are female. Previous studies on gender balance in the social work profession have focused on interviewing male social workers on their experience of being in a minority. The study had a social constructivist point of view and the empirical findings have been analyzed from Hirdmans (1988) theory on gender system. Our results show that there are both positive and negative outcomes of working in a female-dominated profession, and that female social workers express mixed views, describing on the one hand a need for more men in social services and on the other hand experience of discrimination favouring male social workers. Achieving equality in the workplace is in the end not just a question of the numbers of female and male workers. (Less)
