Abstract
The majority of current social workers are female. Previous studies on gender balance in the social work profession have focused on interviewing male social workers on their experience of being in a minority. Our aim with this study has therefore been to examine female social workers’ views on and experience of gender imbalance in the social work profession. We have taken a qualitative approach, conducting three focus groups with a total of 10 social workers to answer questionnaires about how female social workers experience working in a workplace with few men, what if any discrimination due to gender they have experienced working in social services and their views on the possible need for more men in social services. The study had a social constructivist point of view and the empirical findings have been analyzed from Hirdmans (1988) theory on gender system. Our results show that there are both positive and negative outcomes of working in a female-dominated profession, and that female social workers express mixed views, describing on the one hand a need for more men in social services and on the other hand experience of discrimination favouring male social workers. Achieving equality in the workplace is in the end not just a question of the numbers of female and male workers. (Less)
