The methodological approaches are sectioned into macro meso and micro levels in order to discover how the international system, the state and the most influential individuals affected the outcome. The first approach examines the history of the states using social constructivism. The second applies rational actor and polyheuristic theory in order to analyse prominent individuals. The third approach
uses the theory of balancing and bandwagoning which focuses on pressure from USA, the Soviet Union and Great Britain in directing the Nordic states towards or away from NATO. All approaches result in sub-conclusions which at the end are being merged into one conclusion which declares that the division mainly is the result of military and economic pressure from dominating states, intersubjective sensation of security in the state, the strength of the state’s military force, purposeful actions from influential individuals and recent experience of violation of the state’s sovereignty.
