Abstract
In 2014 the de facto annexation of Crimea by the Russia became official. Crimea was accordingly recognized as a part of Russia; what led to these events? The purpose of this thesis is to examine how we can understand Russia’s behavior against Ukraine from an identity perspective. Tomas Lindemanns theory is the foundation of this thesis, his work present how a state can be non-recognized in the international fora and how this can lead to conflict. The thesis is examined in a discourse analysis spanning the years 2007–2014 where speeches by both Russian leaders, Vladimir Putin and Dmitri Medvedev are analyzed. The discourse analysis of the time period in question show that NATO-expansion is central in the discourse, and the threat this poses to Russia, furthermore, we can see how Euromaidan was a catastrophe from Russia’s view. What can be seen in the results is that during time period analyzed the Russian state is non-recognized and how this pointing to an explanation of Russia’s behavior against Ukraine. (Less)
