- Malmo’s visions in their planning documents are to be a sustainable city with sustainable travel. In the future Malmo will be a city with short distances and great availability to all parts of the city. To be able to meet these goals and visions it will be necessary to change and improve the public transport system and in particular the accessibility for buses in city traffic.
This essay aims to investigate how the city of Malmo are planning for the city buses ability to get around in the city traffic, how the city’s plan documents are working to-wards achieving sustainable traveling to benefit the bus accessibility and how that can be related to the city’s aims in sustainability. This essay aims to investigate how the city of Malmo are planning for the city buses ability to get around in the city traffic, how the city’s plan documents are working to-wards achieving sustainable traveling to benefit the bus accessibility and how that can be related to the city’s aims in sustainability. The essay also aims to investigate what measures the city of Malmo take to reduce car traffic in the city. The theoretical frame-work constitutes definitions and associated concepts of accessibility for buses in the city, availability and mobility. Sustainable development and sustainable travel are also part of the theoretical framework.
The empirical data are based on data from written documents mainly from Malmo stad and other publications from Skånetrafiken and Trafikverket among others. Scientific articles are also a significant part of the empiricism.
The result of this study shows that the ability for buses to get around in the city is depending of a reduction in car traffic. In addition to this are the city of Malmo planning to prioritize the bus routes with the most traffic through separated bus ways, bus lanes and signal priority at intersections, as well as in the future to change the infrastructure of the future concept of the main city streets.
