Abstract
The current study is based on self-determination theory and address well-being and motivation from a salutogenic and qualitative approach. The aim is to describe well-being and motivation in a work context and, to shed light over why and how some employees become highly motivated. To recruit motivated employees, an on-line, quantitative survey, measuring well-being (GHQ12) and motivation (BNSW and WEIMS), was conducted in an organization with 340 white-collar employees. One hundred eighty-five individuals completed the survey, issuing a response rate of 54 %. An interpretative phenomenological approach with semi-structured interviews was used and eight motivated employees were interviewed. Previous research was verified and well-being and motivation were positively correlated. Descriptions of well-being resulted in findings of mainly psychosocial well-being factors, divided in the levels of organization, team and individual. The experiences of motivation were divided in basic needs, according to self-determination theory, and the levels of organization, team and individual. Organizational values and leadership factors emerged as important and similar enhancing factors within both well-being and motivation. (Less)
