Abstract
Public transport affects people on a daily basis and therefore it is important for the public transport sector to improve the user experience for travellers. Simplicity is a keyword in the improved user experience where mobile solutions play an important role for the experience. The aim in this master thesis is to explore ways how to use a smartphone to make it easier for travellers and how to present the information needed in a specific context.

User research was conducted by identifying travellers’ needs and behaviours during an unknown trip. In this master’s thesis ’the unknown trip’ is defined by a traveller that lacks information about the local area and information about all or parts of the trip. This covers a tourist with no knowledge of how to buy tickets, as well as a person who has visited the city before but lacks knowledge regarding bus routes and stops. Two focus groups were held and direct observations of travellers were made.

Based on the results from the user research a conceptual design was developed using a user-centered design approach by a lo-fi prototype for a smartphone. With inspiration from other apps the prototype was refined and a new version was evaluated by explorative user tests. The results from the explorative user tests were used as input to create an interactive hi-fi prototype, which was compared with Skånetrafiken’s current app by a comparison test.

According to the user research travellers tended to hold on to their decisions without considering alternative routes. Even experienced travellers who were comfortable using travel apps also found great difficulty using Skånetrafiken’s app.

The final user tests showed that the participants valued the concept presented by the new prototype. A trip often consists of several steps where some of the parts include walking. During ’the unknown trip' travellers are in more need of getting an overview over the different parts of the trips not travelled by a public means of transport, which emphasises the importance of including a map as part of an app. The map is one of the main reasons why the participants preferred to use the prototype. They also thought that it was more intuitive, easier to use and more efficient. (Less)
