- Sweden’s history of nature conservation spans over 100 years and is an important part of what has characterized the nature that we have today. During those 100 years, there have been several different kinds of actions to preserve the Swedish nature. 20 years ago, Sweden became a member of the European Union and the authorities had to face the challenge of enforcing requirements that came from following directives with a different approach in nature conservation. Protected nature become increasingly important for the conservation of biological diversity, but it requires substantial resources for planning and management. - Sweden’s history of nature conservation spans over 100 years and is an important part of what has characterized the nature that we have today. During those 100 years, there have been several different kinds of actions to preserve the Swedish nature. 20 years ago, Sweden became a member of the European Union and the authorities had to face the challenge of enforcing requirements that came from following directives with a different approach in nature conservation. Protected nature become increasingly important for the conservation of biological diversity, but it requires substantial resources for planning and management. This essay explores how the European nature conservation Natura 2000 has affected the Swedish nature conservation and how the Swedish municipalities and counties think about the development. A questionnaire was sent out to municipalities and counties to evaluate the views on Natura 2000 and its effects in Sweden. The investigation revealed that the officials in the municipalities and counties where positive about Natura 2000 and that directives in Natura 2000 affects the Swedish nature conservation. (Less)

I slutet av 90-talet gjordes en undersökning bland kommuner och länsstyrelser för att se hur de såg på en av delarna av Natura 2000 som heter habitatdirektivet. Habitatdirektivet är en bestämmelse från EU som sätter mål och krav för skyddade arter och miljöer som valts ut tillsammans med medlemsländerna. I undersökningen på 90-talet var det en stor del av de tillfrågade som var osäkra eller negativa inför de framtida effekterna av EU-medlemskapet på den svenska naturvården.
Under 2015 gjordes en liknande studie där det undersöktes hur Natura 2000-skyddet påverkar den svenska naturvården samt hur kommuner och Länsstyrelser tycker om utvecklingen. En enkät skickades ut till alla kommuner och Länsstyrelse med frågor om hur de ser på framtida effekterna på naturvården med Natura 2000 samt om naturvården hade utvecklats till det bättre med EU:s stöd och finansiering.
Resultatet av undersökningen visade att både kommuner och Länsstyrelser tyckte att naturvården i Sverige hade utvecklats till det bättre med EU bestämmelser och ekonomiska hjälp till naturvården. De ställde sig även positiva inför framtida effekter på naturvården med Natura 2000. Även om de var positiva inför framtiden så uttrycktes det i kommentarer att systemet för Natura 2000 borde förbättras och att det saknas resurser för att sköta alla områden. För att utreda exakt på vilka sätt Natura 2000 påverkar naturvården krävs det en fortsättningsstudie med intervjuer.
