- Abstract
- Stress and mental illness are growing and are the leading causes to sickness and sick relief from work. A lot of the stress is due to psychosocial factors, i.e. how the individual is shaped by and herself shapes the environment (the context she is currently in) through social norms. Norms which are culturally contingent and shaped with the capitalistic system. Capitalism, with its built in need for continuous profit accumulation no matter what, lay as a foundation to the artificial rhythm that the urban life is characterized by. Money on the right hand, the watch on the left hand are both causing stress to the individual. If the stress is never relieved, unbalance will occur. However, this unbalanced state is still accumulating profit since the process – where health is achieved through the bureaucratic structure with different decision-making ranks, technology, and medical practice, designed for 'efficiency' – mainly deals with the symptom. Real depth is never fully reached within this view on human and health. This, continuous focus on the process, is what our leading health organization like WHO and Folkhälsomyndigheten are putting up as future goals. On paper a lot sounds good but the complete absence of place is troublesome. The place, meaning a green natural environment i.e. a Health Garden or forest for example, work wonders concerning rest and well-being. Continuous studies show the diverse health benefits that comes from meeting a competent medical staff in a green environment. A depth is reached where the individual leaves the rehabilitation with a self-reflective mind and tools to handle future stress by listening to the self. It is balance which is highly needed, but the difficulties lies in who will generate profit from this kind of green rehabilitation. Green areas around hospitals and health centers, together with more green nature in our cities will ease the stress caused by capitalism. More balanced people will be able to work longer and help the wheel go around. Plus, this mind set of being in nature and being cared by nature, I personally believe will reach a higher respect for nature and a need to work against the forces destroying our planet. (Less)
