- Abstract
- This paper highlights the news media's reflection of the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi, trans) -people in South Africa. Although South Africa in 1994 implemented a protection in the Constitution against discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation it is constantly reported on violence and harassment against LGBT- persons. Given that previous research highlights the causal factors such as South Africa's history of institutionalized racism, patriarchy culture and segregation, I wanted to find out whether there may be other underlying factors.
I therefor looked at the state of media discourse to see if I could find patterns and common themes regarding LGBT- persons. I focused on one case, the corrective rape of the lesbian girl Duduzile Zozo.... I therefor looked at the state of media discourse to see if I could find patterns and common themes regarding LGBT- persons. I focused on one case, the corrective rape of the lesbian girl Duduzile Zozo. With the help of critical discourse analysis and Faircloughs three-dimensional model, I have analyzed the following major newspapers; The Mail & Guardian, The Star, The Sunday Times and News24. My results shows that the papers did have a common discourse regarding LGBT-persons and in the reporting of Duduzile Zozo. The results also shows that newspapers with many readers share common values; they all want to work against discrimination of LGBT-persons and maintain a supportive attitude towards LGBT-persons in their discourse.
