Abstract
This thesis addresses the question if the notion of good democratic representation, as developed by Suzanne Dovi (2007), can be applied in concert with institutional arrangements that are characteristic to representative government where political parties play a crucial role in defining the democratic system. One key feature is argued to be the normative principle of representatives as spokespersons for political parties. A normative method is applied in two different ways: first, by way of conceptual analysis, and secondly, by comparing the core concepts and ideas of the two views. Following these steps, the study can demonstrate two main findings. First, the analysis shows that the main discrepancies between the two principles are due to... (More)
This thesis addresses the question if the notion of good democratic representation, as developed by Suzanne Dovi (2007), can be applied in concert with institutional arrangements that are characteristic to representative government where political parties play a crucial role in defining the democratic system. One key feature is argued to be the normative principle of representatives as spokespersons for political parties. A normative method is applied in two different ways: first, by way of conceptual analysis, and secondly, by comparing the core concepts and ideas of the two views. Following these steps, the study can demonstrate two main findings. First, the analysis shows that the main discrepancies between the two principles are due to different emphases in the representational process. It then shows that redefining the role of political representatives can solve much of the innate differences. Following the normative analysis of the idea of good democratic representation in relation to the idea of the representative as a party agent, the study concludes that there are no conceptual limitations on implementation of the idea of good democratic representation in a political system.
