- Abstract
- Psychosocial ill health and stress is an increasing problem in modern working life. In today’s society when more and more work responsibility lies on the individual employee, support is needed to help the individual balance work and private life. Our epistemological base lies in the interpretive perspective, meaning that reality can be understood from different perspectives, and interpreted in different ways. In the current study an organization’s value basis, Leading by Example, was examined with the purpose of understanding how it is complied within practice and if it can be used as a way to influence employee's everyday decisions and actions in a more health promoting way. Our epistemological base lies in the interpretive perspective, meaning that reality can be understood from different perspectives, and interpreted in different ways. The approach was qualitative and semistructured interviews were con-ducted with employees within one department (N=8, four managers and four employees) focusing on informants' ex-periences and personal interpretation of the concept of Leading by Example and it’s relationship to a health promoting working environment. The results confirm that a good role model is a central element of Leading by Example and that it is also in this way that the concept is perceived by the informants. The results, however, also show that a uniform explicit definition is needed to further influence the health promoting effects. Further important elements that should characterize the modelled relationship is support, presence and trust. The conclusion of this paper is that there is a relationship between Leading by Example and a health promoting working environment – a relationship that would benefit from clearer common definitions and goals.
