(2016) SOPA63 20152School of Social Work
- Abstract
- This study aims to map out the phenomenon of Swedish social work students working part time jobs and to analyze the reported reasons for why they work alongside their university education. In Sweden, education is free of cost and the students are offered allowance and loan to cover the costs of being a student – such as literature, food and rent.
To answer this purpose, a questionnaire was handed out to social work students at Lunds University to be able to map out the students working habits. In order to illuminate the students reported reasons for working and what these reasons can depend on a focus group of four social work students was carried out. The study applies consumerism, individualism and capital as its theoretical framework.

The main results of this study showed that 72 % of the social work students at Lunds University have part time jobs alongside their academic education. The findings also revealed two main reasons for working part time; 1. to make money and 2. to gain working life experience. (Less)
