How can burnout be understood as a relational phenomenon? Six interviews have been carried out to collect material for the analysis. The interviews have been of three different kinds: face to face, by telephone and by e-mail. A hermeneutical and phenomenological approach is used to analyze the material as well as theoretical tools from Jean-Paul Sartre, Erving Goffman and Johan Asplund. The result is divided in three themes: not being in charge of one’s own life, struggle and loneliness. Burnout as experience in the interviewees’ life world is understood as being derived from a state of being in which the individual is not able to take responsibility. (Less)
