Abstract
This study examines how the social movement Refugees Welcome to Malmö managed to mobilize hundreds of volunteers in a short space of time in the autumn of 2015. The movements aim was to help refugees who had arrived at the Central train station in the southern swedish town Malmö with food, clothes and money. Using a theory-testing approach, this paper examines if the theories of framing and of discursive opportunity structures can explain the massive mobilization level. By analysing the movements framings in social media and the impact on regional newspapers the conclusion is that due to a national and regional public opinion in favour of asylum rights, and Refugees Welcome to Malmö's loose connection with the greater international...
