One of the most important of these tools in recent years has been different social media platforms. The terror organization that goes by the name the Islamic State has in recent years been on the frontline of using this new arena of information to further their cause. Social media represents a unique battlefield in the war of information that is ongoing between the Islamic State and their opponents.
The goal of this paper to analyze this new phenomenon using a background of empirical research conducted on the coverage of said phenomenon by leading actors of the Swedish Press. Furthermore, material put forward by other researchers on the topic of Islamic terrorism presence on social media will be used as an empirical basis for analysis. By utilizing the tools created by the Copenhagen School of Security Studies and the concept of Securitization the goal is to further the understanding of how relationship between the Islamic States presence on social media and the Swedish Press’ coverage thereof changes the perception of security in regards to these matters.
I conclude that there is a possible relationship between the securitization of the Islamic State’s usage of social media in regards to societal security as defined by the Swedish press and the securitization of western opposition towards the goal of societal security as defined by the Islamic State. This relationship of mutual, yet contradictory securitization creates a spiral of ever-increasing securitization which creates a hotbed for conflict. (Less)
