Abstract
The feeling of being unsafe in the city creates restrictions in many people's lives. The urban environment has an impact on the perception of safety and the municipality can through their work with the urban design affect the safety. This thesis analyzes a form of citizen participation in urban development, called safety walks. The aim of the study is to examine in which ways safety walks may be significant for the municipal work of creating safer public spaces through urban design. A case study of Malmö municipality is conducted regarding their work with and experience from organizing safety walks. Interviews and a literature study were conducted. The feeling of being unsafe in the city creates restrictions in many people's lives. The theoretical framework cover both citizen participation in urban development and the question of how the physical environment can affect perceptions of safety.

A conclusion to be drawn from the study is that safety walks potentially may contribute to a knowledge base and a better outcome when the experience from everyday life is included in the municipality's work. This knowledge base may partially contribute to the work with long-term planning but primarily it may contribute to the continuous work of managing the existing urban environments. However, this study stresses that safety walks can be difficult to implement. Furthermore the main benefits of using this method appears to be found in democratic aspects and not regarding the municipal work with increasing safety in the city through urban design. (Less)
