Abstract
This study examines the process of gentrification. In so doing, the main aim is to explore a context wherein the process of gentrification is deemed unconventional. The context deemed unconventional is the one beyond the city, more accurately a coastal hamlet called Brantevik, located in the municipality of Simrishamn, in the southeastern part of the Scania region. By investigating whether Brantevik has gone through a process of gentrification and in what way, this study takes part in extending the interpretation of gentrification as a social and spatial phenomenon. Consequently, the geography of gentrification seems to be more extensive than one confined to urban areas.

In order to identify the process of gentrification in the case of Brantevik, this study uses archival research in combination with official statistics. The archival sources consist of legal ratifications of the acquisition of real estate properties and building permits over time, in seven blocks of Brantevik. The official statistics consists of income-, education- and housing price data. By examining these sources, one can decide on whether a population has changed in such a way that a new group of a higher socio-economic status has displaced a previous group of lower socio-economic status and if associated changes in the built environment has occurred. Applying this definition of gentrification, the analysis led to a final assessment, namely that Brantevik has gone through a process of gentrification.
Finally, a theoretical framework anchored to the main historical trajectories of rural areas in general, Brantevik in specific, led to an interpretation of the mechanisms that could explain why Brantevik was gentrified from the very beginning.
