Since most previous studies about internal return migration have been quantitative, this study takes a qualitative approach in order to deepen the knowledge about return migrants self-experienced motives for returning. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with return migrants from the rural municipality Olofström, which has seen its population decline over a number of years. The theoretical framework consists of both theory that explains return migration as an outcome of external forces, and theory that focuses on the migrant as the active decision maker. The result indicates that although social connections are the primary reason for returning, the return move is often the outcome of a complex interplay of place related motives, that except from social connections also concerns work opportunities and preferences for a rural living environment.
