Research question-/s: What are the challenges of employee-driven innovation during the phase of ideation and how are they related to decision structures?

Methodology: The case-in-case study takes place in a Swedish health and fitness company. Its research approach is qualitative and iterative between inductive and deductive methods. The main case was chosen as it provided a rich source of data in regards to employee-driven innovation within the case company. To gather the empirical data, nine semi-structured interviews were conducted. The inductive approach of this study was ensured through the application of within-case and cross-case analysis.

Theoretical perspectives: The study is positioned in the research area focused on the challenges of employee-driven innovation during the phase of ideation. It analyzes how one key driver of employee-driven innovation - decision structures, is related to the identified challenges. This study is framed within the broader concept of corporate entrepreneurship to observe similarities and differences regarding the known challenges in corporate entrepreneurship and the unknown challenges of employee-driven innovation.

Conclusions: The study contributes to existing literature on employee-driven innovation by unveiling the challenges of employee-driven innovation and their relation to decision structures. Four main challenges alongside two influencing factors regarding decision structures were identified. The findings offer recommendations and initial insights for managers in relation to how to overcome these challenges. (Less)
