Abstract
The aim of this study is to investigate the references to a national and/or a European identity in the news coverage of the terrorist attack in Paris, France on the 13th of November 2015. How does the news coverage of the second bloodiest terrorist attack to ever take place in Europe, after Madrid 2004, appear in terms of identity? Does the national identity overshadow a supranational identity, or do the media draw more attention to a European identity? This paper aims to examine which one of these two identities is referred to the most in the news coverage.

By using the content analysis method both quantitatively and qualitatively, the chosen material, which consists of articles from a total of six newspapers from Britain, France and Sweden, have been analyzed to discover and clarify the frequencies of references to the two identities.

The main conclusion of the study is that both a national and a European identity are referred to in the articles. Moreover, the study shows that the national identity is mentioned the most. This goes for all six newspapers, even though individually differences can be found and are shown in this paper. (Less)
