Det (o)kända företaget bakom produkterna - En kvalitativ studie om komplexa företagsvarumärkens nya marknadsföringsgrepp
(2016) SKOK01 20161Department of Strategic Communication
- Abstract (Swedish)
- Today, more and more organisations with a house of brands architecture, characterized by a strong company brand and several independent, well-known product brands, are using a large amount of resources on communicating the company brand. This development indicates a shift in how organisations with this architecture operates on the market. This study aims to examine how organisations use branding strategies to communicate a previously unknown company brand. By adopting a strategic communication perspective in order to determine what distinguishes this trend, the study intends to fill the existing knowledge gap in the field of corporate communications for house of brands organisations, identified in previous research. The study has a constructionist approach to knowledge and a qualitative analysis of texts has been undertaken on commercials from two “case” organisations: Unilever and P&G. Three
commercials from the campaign of each “case” organisation, Unilever’s “BrightFuture” campaign and P&G’s “Thank You, Mom” campaign, has been analyzed through semiotic studies and by using the tools color, form and content. The result of the study shows that organisations in this position seems to aim to gain the synergy effects usually found in a branded house architecture, but at the same time keep some of the features from their traditional house of brands structure. By using different visual tactics and stories in the commercials the organisations strive to construct favourable associations in the minds of consumers in order to legitimize their presence on the market and to create a converted “spill-over”-effect, where the company brand becomes a quality mark that supports its product brands.
