Ekosystemtjänster som begrepp i stadsplanering

- Abstract
- Ecosystem services (ES) is an up-and-coming concept which refers to
benefits humanity gets from functions provided by natural systems.
Investigating how cities have embraced the ES concept within their urban
planning is important in order to be able to assess the awareness of
human dependence of nature’s functions and the potential of the ES
concept to increase this awareness. In this study, planning documents
were analyzed for three small and three large municipalities in Southern

types that occurred in most documents. Five out of six cities mentioned

ES explicitly in at least one document. Documents concerning green
space planning tended to mention ES explicitly more than comprehensive
plan or documents focusing on a single issue. The scope of different types
of ES mentioned per city ranged from 11 to 22, out of 23 types listed in
this study. All 23 types occurred at least once whereas habitat, recreation
and stormwater treatment were mentioned most frequently. Documents
referring to ES explicitly showed a slight trend to also have a higher scope
of services mentioned. No difference was detected between large and
small municipalities apart from large ones mentioning a higher number of
ES types. The results show that the ES concept has made its way into the
studied cities’ consciousness and that several types of ES are featured in
planning documents, some more than others. The awareness seems
highest within the green space/environmental planning. Explicit use of the
ES term might help to increase the awareness about different types of ES,
generating a higher understanding of which benefits can be reaped by
planning a city where ES can be produced. (Less) - Popular Abstract (Swedish)
