Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe and analyze how parents relate to their children’s internet use. Studies have shown that children nine years and older have increased access to private tablets and smartphones, leading to unsupervised online opportunities. We chose to perform a qualitative study with semi-structured interviews. We interviewed parents of three girls and three boys between the ages of nine and ten. The results of the study revealed that parents were faced with various difficulties while guiding their children’s internet use. We discerned that the parents limited the children’s internet use by regulating their time, and to a lesser degree discussing risks associated with being online. The parents thought that their children were too young to discuss all the dangers with being online. In our study, it became evident that parents were lacking the children’s knowledge regarding the internet and its functions. (Less)
