- In today's society, a third of all food that is produced globally goes to waste. The waste is not only an economic loss, but also a waste of natural resources in an already strained global climate. The problem with food waste is getting more recognized and different solutions are currently being discussed on a global level. - In today's society, a third of all food that is produced globally goes to waste. The waste is not only an economic loss, but also a waste of natural resources in an already strained global climate. The problem with food waste is getting more recognized and different solutions are currently being discussed on a global level. This paper emanates from the new French legislation regarding the ban against food waste in supermarkets which was promulgated in February of 2016. The law is the first of its kind and it has been widely discussed all over the world. The aim of this study is to examine what possibilities there are for legislation to, in a Swedish context, affect the food waste in supermarkets and what alternatives there are to reach a solution. Through qualitative interviews with actors in the retail sector, we have examined the management of food waste in supermarkets as well as their attitudes to food waste and legislation. The empirical data is analyzed using the theory of the consumer society of Zygmunt Bauman and we also apply transnational private regulation (TPR) to the analysis. Our conclusion is that there is today extensive work being done with reducing food waste within the Swedish society. We can also see tendencies towards a stabilization of this normative behavior. These are conditions conducive to both TPR and legal regulation. We also argue that the consumer society has a sizeable impact on the norms regarding food waste in supermarkets and the society as a whole. (Less)
