Abstract
This master thesis consists of improving the transportation by bicycle combined with trains, and make it more user-friendly. The project involved developing a portable carrier that can be offloaded from a transport bicycle and reloaded on a train, and then transported further. Once at the final destination of the rail transportation, the box can easily be transferred from the train to a waiting transport bicycle on location.
The client was believed to have sufficient knowledge and experience; therefore, the project was based entirely on his thoughts. Interviews were conducted with the client to gather information.
The information was collected, combined with different ideas from benchmarking, are inspiration source for the following concept generation. The interview with the client also obtained a list of requirements and a list of requests, which all of the concept ideas was valued from.
Concept generation was accomplished by the master thesis group members, through brainstorming, sketching and discussing. Basic drawings are made by all the concepts that feels reasonable and relevant. Then all the concepts are evaluated based on the client's requirements and preferences and a winning concept was obtained. The winning concept and all the concepts with high scores, are presented to the client. The client, in turn, provided feedback and made decisions about which concepts to be taken forward for development.
The chosen concept was then developed, and a design was defined. Dimensions and materials are tested and evaluated by making 3D parts in Solid Works and tests and prediction analyses in ANSYS Workbench. The design, dimensions and choice of materials was in this way resulting in an optimized product in regards to strength, weigh and cost. Based on the design, a prototype was manufactured to get a true sense of how the concept could work. The prototype was made in the same dimensions as the end product will have, but in simpler and cheaper materials.
The result consists of a compiled list of all the parts that are required to produce the final product. Although drawings and 3D images attached to easily see how the parts will be put together and a final product can be obtained.
An investigation was done to compare how transport by train, car and truck affects the environment. The result of this study is that transport by train affects the environment the least. (Less)
