Abstract
Purpose: The primary aim of this study is to assess current environmental reporting undertaken by oil and gas companies in Europe with respect to COP 21.

Methodology: This study is exploratory in nature. By developing an environmental performance assessment framework
incorporating COP 21 requirements and oil and gas industry specific voluntary disclosure guidelines, a qualitative content analysis of environmental disclosure was conducted.

Theoretical Perspectives: The authors advocate previous studies and empirical results to formulate the assessment framework. Further, agency-, institutional-, stakeholder- and legitimacy theory largely determine the level of environmental disclosure activities by companies.

Empirical Foundation:... (More)

Theoretical Perspectives: The authors advocate previous studies and empirical results to formulate the assessment framework. Further, agency-, institutional-, stakeholder- and legitimacy theory largely determine the level of environmental disclosure activities by companies.

Empirical Foundation: A sample size of 17 European oil and gas companies building the STOXX 600 index representing Great Britain, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Portugal, Spain and Italy.

Conclusion: Empirical findings are ambiguous. While, in line with previous studies, environmental disclosure is lacking quality as for reporting content and transparency, COP 21 required information is well established except for two major weaknesses surrounding EU specific targets: mitigation to reduce carbon emissions by 2030 and achieving non-zero emission by 2050.
