Abstract
The aim of this thesis is to study the security concept presented in official speeches held by former Chinese president Hu Jintao and current president Xi Jinping in order to determine how their understanding of the security concept has affected Chinese politics during the years 2009-2016. The starting point of this thesis is Deng’s foreign policy after opening up China to the world. An idea that restricted China to focus on developing the country and the economy, and prevented China from committing to international interest. Today analysts agree that Deng’s strategy... (More)
The aim of this thesis is to study the security concept presented in official speeches held by former Chinese president Hu Jintao and current president Xi Jinping in order to determine how their understanding of the security concept has affected Chinese politics during the years 2009-2016. It uses relevant security theory in order to explore different security ideals, and regime theory to understand different political approaches in the international system. The starting point of this thesis is Deng’s foreign policy after opening up China to the world. An idea that restricted China to focus on developing the country and the economy, and prevented China from committing to international interest. Today analysts agree that Deng’s strategy very much affected Jintao’s foreign policy and understanding of security. It is argued that Xi Jinping has embraced more of a status quo approach, because of the benefits that follows from working within the international system. However, if choosing between international responsibility and Chinese national interests, the national interests of China will always come first, which indicates that an approached led by realism is still given priority.
