Från hamnar till hälsa - en studie av life science kluster i Kobe och Göteborg

- Abstract
- The phenomenon of clusters has been thoroughly studied, and nowadays many
governments have some kind of program to promote clusters. While many studies have been conducted on how clusters function, there are still uncertainties regarding their emergence and evolution. This thesis focuses on the concept of “cluster life cycles”, and have from theories regarding the concept formed a model for the creation and development of clusters. The theoretical model that forms the basis for this essay’s analysis makes assumptions on what factors would affect the emergence of clusters, and what characteristics that would be present during each life cycle phase. With this model, the life cycles of two life science clusters in Gothenburg (Sweden) and Kobe (Japan) have been studied. Through a detailed study of the pre-conditions, and the emergence and evolution of the two clusters, the essay hopes to draw conclusions regarding how the studied clusters comport with the existing theories. The result shows that despite the two cities’ similar background, differences in their basic conditions have affected their evolution. A cluster can develop and be successful, even though the necessary factors (according to present theory) are lacking. The thesis also shows that a cluster can have a slow development, despite the presence of superior pre-conditions. (Less)
