Abstract
Activity based workplace offices are more and more common in organizations today. Recent research in this field of interest is quite limited and in particular research concerning leadership in relation to activity based environments. The question is what consequences the introduction of an activity based workplace office has for the leadership within the organization. The purpose of our study is to describe and analyze what possibilities and challenges leaders face in an activity based environment. The study was made at Orkla Foods Sweden which moved to a new activity based workplace in March 2016. We have used qualitative interviews with an abductive methodology. The interviews were conducted with six leaders at five different departments within Orkla Foods Sweden. The conclusion from our results is that there are possibilities as well as challenges when being a leader in an activity based workplace. The leaders experienced that the possibility of cross functional work between departments increased and became more efficient. At the same time they also found it challenging to locate their co-workers at the workplace. Further on, they experienced new challenges concerning communication, controlling psychosocial aspects of the workplace environment and also a decreased effectivity within the team. With the result from this study, we want to contribute with new knowledge at two different levels. First, we want to give Orkla Foods Sweden insight into what possibilities and challenges leaders in their organization experience in the activity based workplace. Second, we want to contribute with new research within the subject of leadership in relation to activity based workplace. (Less)
