- Abstract (Swedish)
(More)

(Less)
- Abstract
- The relationship between the dark triad and the Big Five is still under debate. The role of social desirability in this relationship has not yet been established. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the relationship between the dark triad and the Big Five and particularly if social desirability confounds the correlations between them. The result was based on 278 participants' responses on the dark triad questionnaire, an evaluative personality inventory and a neutralized personality inventory where it is not obvious to the respondent what would be a socially desirable response. Respondents age varied between 18-73 and was dominated by the female sex (67,7%) and mainly Swedish citizens. Additional data was collected using... (More)

Respondents age varied between 18-73 and was dominated by the female sex (67,7%) and mainly Swedish citizens. Additional data was collected using a popularity measure, to investigate which trait that was perceived as the most impopular (least socially desirable). As expected, the bivariate correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between the neutral variables and the three dark traits after reducing social desirability. A multivariate regression analysis was conducted to see if social desirability was a confounding variable. Our results showed that social desirability is a confounding variable but also that the evaluative Big Five regulates these relationships. We demonstrate that by using evaluatively neutralized items one can counteract for social desirability. Further research need to be conducted to analyze the interplay between the dark triad, Big Five, social desirability and confounders found in the evaluative test. (Less)
