- Abstract
- The purpose of the study is to examine how probation officers reason about the execution of community service. The material used in this study consist of interviews conducted with highly experienced probation officers. The material was analyzed with a qualitative analysis method. The account theory in combination with the concept of discretion are the theories used. The result indicate that the respondents perceive the law as problematic due to multiple reasons. For instance community service is considered to lack punitative aspects which in turn means that the punishment is disproportionate to the committed crime.
