- Abstract
- The aim of the thesis is to investigate constructions of mental illness in course literature used in a Bachelor’s programme in social work. The empirical material consists of books and reports about mental illness used within a programme. The material has been analyzed through a qualitative method called perspective analysis, drawing upon discourse analysis. Our analysis shows that there are elements of differences concerning how mental illness is portrayed regarding women and men and also children and elderly. This is expressed through typical case stories, choice of words and symptom definitions of mental illness. The knowledge which the students brings into their future jobs, based on the textbooks, is thereby characterized and shaped... (More)
