- Abstract
- This thesis researches territorial stigmatisation in the context of urban renewal and state-led gentrification in Gothenburg. Focusing on post-industrial transformation in the geographical area of Hisingen, the thesis reaffirms the need for critical analyses of urban renewal. The thesis explores discourses about the district of Hisingen using Norman Fairclough’s model for critical discourse analysis. In analysing the production and reproduction of discourses found in newspaper articles and official documents from the municipality, the thesis emphasises an urgent need to rethink and reflect upon the image of place and force of urban change. - This thesis researches territorial stigmatisation in the context of urban renewal and state-led gentrification in Gothenburg. Focusing on post-industrial transformation in the geographical area of Hisingen, the thesis reaffirms the need for critical analyses of urban renewal. The thesis explores discourses about the district of Hisingen using Norman Fairclough’s model for critical discourse analysis. In analysing the production and reproduction of discourses found in newspaper articles and official documents from the municipality, the thesis emphasises an urgent need to rethink and reflect upon the image of place and force of urban change. The analysis highlights a discrepancy between stigmatising images of place and the lived experience of place, thereby demonstrating the limitations of stigmatising discourses. It is argued that the common discourse associated with Hisingen has facilitated interventions by the local state (municipal government) and a wholesale renewal of the area. It is concluded that territorial stigmatisation relocates the focus of state intervention from individuals to economic structures and the built environment, thus legitimating neglect of social dimensions of urban development.
