This study explores the employment relationship, working conditions, and work-family relations of part-time domestic workers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The aim of this study is to generate knowledge regarding part-time domestic workers, and to add to the broader literature available on domestic workers in Bangladesh. This thesis applies a qualitative case study method to gain in-depth knowledge and lived experiences of both part-time domestic workers and employers in Dhaka, Bangladesh. In order to answer the research questions, semi-structured individual
interviews and focus group discussion were utilized to gather in-depth information regarding demographics, reasons for entering domestic work, working conditions, employment relationships, and work-life relations of part-time domestic workers. A combination of theoretical and conceptual frameworks was employed to analyze the findings. These frameworks include concepts of Globalization and Family by Bahira Sherif-Trask, Unified Theory of Social Relations by Alan Page Fiske, and the concepts of Contact Space and Boundary Work. The findings demonstrate how part-time domestic workers and employers negotiate and redesign the working conditions and employment relationship. Additionally, the self-perception, work-perception and satisfaction, and work-life relations of the part-time domestic workers are also discussed and analyzed to understand how engagement in paid employment effects different aspects of their lives.
