New media usage for counter-democratic communication : a case study of Uued Uudised

- The usage of new media spaces has a strong impact in contemporary politics and democracy as political messages are largely exchanged through new communicative spaces of media. These democratized media spaces are also used for counter-democratic communication by right-wing populists around Europe. This thesis is a case study of the Estonian right-wing populist media platform Uued Uudised. The articles provided by the right-wing populist outlet Uued Uudised and comments by their supporters on social media platform Facebook are analyzed for counter-democratic discourses, falling under several themes.

The aim of this study is to understand in what manner right-wing populists use new democratized media to spread counter-democratic messages. The rhetoric content of the discourses, their construction methods as well as reception is under scruitny to understand media practice of the news media portal Uued Uudised. The reading follows thematic implications provided by the previous research on the matter, dealing with discourses such as anti-immigration, Euroscepticism, anti-government, anti-media and a new addition to the right-wing populist rhetoric – liquid ideology.
A Critical discourse analysis within this thesis follows the traditions of Fairclough, Van Dijk and Wodak. The method is applied on 253 articles from timeframe of October 2015 until March 2017. Findings show that the portal under scrutiny makes use of the new media’s unedited nature by publishing articles with counter-democratic agenda. The discursive practices portray counter-democratic and radical rhetoric dominating within the media portals articles. The study of comments under popular articles on Facebook suggests a reproduction and recontextualisation of already present discourses by the recipients. (Less)
