- Abstract
- This study serves to explore the usage of mobile financial technology amongst MSME owners and operators. Taking the form of a case study in a town of higher-than-average poverty in rural Ghana, it represents a rare mixed-methods investigation of technology acceptance, in addition to serving as an empirical test of the well-worn Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) in relation to a specific, often-overlooked arm of mobile banking, namely mobile payments. Building on TAM as a base, the study aims to test the role various demographic features play in technology adoption, building on a variety of previous studies. The results showed that one of the model’s main arms (perceived usefulness (PU)) was significant, whilst the other (perceived ease of... (More)

The results showed that one of the model’s main arms (perceived usefulness (PU)) was significant, whilst the other (perceived ease of use (PEOU)) was not, and that whilst the study suggested demographics have little effect on usage in the town, the limited statistical significance of a number of the results makes broad assumptions difficult. It was found that overall the technology is widely used by MSME owners in the town, and that MSMEs’ willingness to use in fact outpaces customer demand. Further studies are required to look at the specific issues surrounding different types of mobile financial technology and to go further in depth into specific demographic and business performance factors (Less)
